For many, many centuries at the northern end of town an old building sat as still as death itself. It was once that a long time ago an ancient General lived at that place, and only offered to bury people in his cemetery that had NOT died in battle. It was his motto, the line of his life. ‘Kingdom of the Dead not killed in Battle’. And so he lived by it.
So from then on, only civilian people were buried in the Cemetery just beyond his backyard yet within the house’s grounds.
Eventually, the good General, believed to be General Nevermore, passed away and was not even buried in his own Cemetery.
The house was passed along to a lonely fellow a few years later. He was a rich man, high and proud, not to mention a lawyer. He completely restored the house, giving it nice velvet carpets and very expensive picture frames and even high quality pins in the door jams and hinges.
One thing the two men did not have in common was their view of the cemetery. The lawyer thought that the cemetery should be allowed for anyone, especially those who died in battle. It was ‘giving honour’ as he so said. So, the cemetery was re-opened and allowed for anyone.
Time passed again, and the lawyer moved away, died, and was carried to another cemetery across the country to rest with his family.
Now the house grows old, creaky, and alone for a long, long, long time. The paint faded on the outside, boards beginning to stumble apart and the windows grew foggy with age.
Something, or Someone, has aroused the old spirits of the graveyard inhabitants. But it’s not only ghosts. Monsters and creatures of child imaginations begin to creep and crawl from their hiding places and roam around the place, choosing the great Nevermore House as their own living quarters. Ghosts, monsters, even vampires seem to crawl across the land from different eras in time and many different places, all gathering and living together in one big house.
So with ghosts and monsters crawling across the lands of General Nevermore, they’re bound to be noticed. Fortunately, no they haven’t. There has been rousing suspicion of hauntings around town and especially up north where the houses grow older and bigger.
People begin to explore, grow curious, the ghosts getting more violent in some cases, curious in others. Under the guidance and rule of the Captain of the Dead, the ghosts and ghouls manage to keep themselves hidden, a secret. For now.
More and more people seem to be coming around and bugging their resting places. Living people grow suspicious of the old house, some threatening to tear it down to keep curious children safe in case it collapses. Every ghost would be threatened to move; to leave; to risk having his or her home and bodies torn and scattered.
Something ELSE has risen close by. The cornfields are haunted by the evil spirit ‘Marcescens’ who was trapped within the form of an object... a scarecrow. He runs around, flopping, screaming, and is a terrible fright to all who get to near. Not only wandering and making a fuss, but he has threatened many a time to actually kill the humans and recent cases of missing children, pets, and even a few adults have been cased, searched, and forgotten... This guy is up to no good.
The real questions are: Why was everyone raised back to this spot so many years ago? Why is more coming? What must one do to find peace? What about keeping the humans from tearing up their home? Plus keeping other monsters from shredding anything-living thing that gets too close! What of Marcescens? He was sure to give everyone away!
A life on both ends; both Living, and Not.
